Samsung’s next smart “phablet,” the Galaxy Note 7, will come with a variety of features, the most interesting of which is iris recognition capabilities. The device will include a front-facing near-infrared camera that will allow users to scan and capture their iris pattern to use instead of a fingerprint for biometric authentication. Dr. Asem Othman, a lead biometric scientist at Hoyos Labs, notes that this technology is likely to become very popular, and Apple may follow suit in 2018 with their own iris scanning solution.
