eliminate passwords multi factor authentication biometrics cybersecurity

New Year, Same Threats

The new year is time for resolutions and change, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to assess the cyber landscape and begin preparing for the threats on the horizon. For 2017, we already have a strong idea of what the biggest threats to cybersecurity will be: Evolving ransomware, unsecured IoT devices, and of course, the continued use of weak or reused passwords. So how are we going to combat these threats?

Multi Factor Authentication

From ransomware to compromised credentials, the only real way to eliminate these leading threats to cybersecurity is to replace the mechanisms we use to access data and systems. We’ve seen time and again, from the Yahoo breaches that were revealed last year to the AdultFriendFinder.com network hack, that passwords are the weakest point in any authentication system. Verizon’s 2016 DBIR showed that compromised credentials accounted for 63 percent of all confirmed data breaches in 2015, and we can expect that percentage to continue to increase until we eliminate passwords altogether.

So What’s New?

The silver lining in all of this is that the technology we have at our fingertips is giving us the perfect tools to improve security and identity authentication. Mobile-based, multi factor authentication that includes biometrics as a second or third factor allows for significant improvements to cybersecurity on a personal and enterprise level. Rather than relying on an archaic form of authentication we can turn to the present, and future, to protect access to what has quickly become one of the most valuable resources in the world – digital data.

Biometrics provide the proof of identity, and the combination of multiple authentication factors that work seamlessly together allows for a convenient-yet-secure use experience for any system.

UPDATE: In October 2017, news sources revealed that Yahoo’s 2013 breach actually affected all 3 billion of its users
